Venice After Dark: Staying Overnight Skips the Day Fee and Costs Up to €5 a Night in Tourist Tax

The cheapest way to see Venice without the crowd is to sleep there. Overnight guests don't pay the €5 or €10 day-tripper fee, and after the last trains leave in the evening the city gets its quiet back. What you pay instead is the city's tourist tax, the imposta di soggiorno, and it's lower than most people think.

For hotels in the historic centre, Giudecca and the islands, the rates since April 2025 run from €1 a night at a one-star to €5 at a five-star, per person. Three stars cost €3.50 and four stars €4.50. In January, the low month, everything drops by about 30%. Only the first five nights are taxed, and children under 10 are exempt.

The Grand Canal at night with lit palazzo facades, street lamps and moored boats reflected in the dark water

This is the Grand Canal at night. Palazzi lit from below, a lamp-post glowing on a small landing, boats tied up and rocking, the water black and gold. No crowd anywhere in the frame. That's the trade.

The city that's emptying

The numbers behind the quiet aren't comfortable. The historic centre had 48,489 residents at the end of 2024, below 48,000 by August 2025, and 47,652 on the counter in a pharmacy window this May. In 2005 it was over 62,000. In September 2023, local campaigners counted 49,693 beds for tourists against 49,304 for residents. The tourist beds won.

Arrivals across the municipality hit about 5.86 million in 2025, up 11.4%. Those are people who stayed at least one night. Day visitors come on top, and those are who the access fee was built for.

Is staying over the ethical choice?

It's the one the city prefers, because it's the one that pays. An overnight guest pays tax, eats dinner and breakfast, and spreads spending past 5pm. A day-tripper off a coach mostly doesn't.

The complication is that every holiday apartment is one fewer flat for a family. If you want the night without adding to that, pick a hotel over a short-term rental, and look past San Marco: Cannaregio and Castello still have neighbourhood bars where residents outnumber visitors after dark.

Bring a torch app and comfortable shoes. The alleys get very dark between lamps.
